A Rocket to the Moon

With MEET ME AT THE JUMPGATE Launching soon, the following looked too good not to snap…

There are rockets everywhere you look! This one was in Rough Trade – Bristol, it was a tabletop promoting Beavertown Brewery beer. I was there on vinyl discovery duty and not beer appreciation as it happens. But I may be tempted to return and sample…

Rockets and beer and in a comic style – what a great combination!

Less Than a Week to Go

There is less than a week to go to the launch of MEET ME AT THE JUMPGATE – the episodic, sci fi, webcomic set in the far future with Max as the main protagonist.

Preparation is underway with hearts in mouths as the webcomic plugin stopped working (the webcomic plugin is pretty essential to a webcomic as you can imagine). Turns out I’d upgraded to the latest version but I needed a few more PHP skills than I possessed. A downgrade got it back working as it should and all’s well with the world.

I’m using Manga+Press plugin for WordPress from Jess Green with my theme of choice; Avant.

mu‘s slipped in the creation of a Christmas Card, that’s currently at the printers and so the webcomic schedule is being squeezed but we’re confident we’ll hit the Saturday 7 December deadline. It’s all up hill from there on…

We’ve been brainstorming some ideas for future development and we’re starting to get excited but more about them later. Keep focused. As I remind myself there’s LESS THAN A WEEK TO GO!

Destination Star Trek – Part 7

A Nebulous Appeal

Destination Star Trek – Part 7: A Nebulous Appeal. I must admit, initially I thought Destination Star Trek might have been a bit of ‘something and nothing’. Something that I might quickly tire of. I was so wrong.

It is greater than the sum of its parts. We went in at the basic level (see That’s the Ticket) and it was definitely worth it, even though a lot of the activities were unavailable to us.

Although we didn’t get to meet members of the series for autographs or photo opportunities we did ‘get to see them’. We saw Brent Spiner – Lt. Commander Data, Denise Crosby – Lt. Tasha Yar, LeVar Burton – Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge all from The Next Generation and many others from newer series. I managed photo’s at a distance but you were asked not to so I haven’t posted.

There were props for photo opportunities, games to play, memorabilia to purchase, books, exhibitions of Star Trek series uniforms and other items but best of all was the exhibition of original art work from comic/graphic novel series (unfortunately, you weren’t allowed to photograph these).

Another thing that makes it is the people. People dressed in everything from Star Trek T-shirts to full blown Klingon outfits. Everyone was interested, happy and friendly.

We will go again next year. The Destination Star Trek website is already updated with Captain Janeway and Seven of One already announced. We will probably go for a higher class of ticket next time.

It’s Not All Fun & Games

Destination Star Trek – Part 6: It’s Not All Fun & Games – there is a serious side to Star Trek and that has proven itself in the science that has come to light, based upon Star Trek technology – see here & here

At this year’s Destination Star Trek, the European Space Agency had a presence. I’m posting some pictures of their work here

Cosmic Observers

BepiColombo

The above diagrams and models show the seriousness of Star Trek. There was even a Borg vessel made out of Lego!

It doesn’t get much more serious than this!

Destination Star Trek – Part 5

Picard

Destination Star Trek – Part 5. It wouldn’t have been Star Trek with Jean-Luc Picard. The Next Generation Captain, his command of NCC-1701-D – Starship Enterprise is legendary. He was actually at this year’s event but being only holders of Janitor-class tickets (see Part 1 blog) we didn’t get to see him in person 🙁

However, with the up and coming Picard scheduled for a release next year, there was plenty of Jean-Luc to keep everyone happy. One of the exhibitions had a wealth of props from Picard’s time aboard the Enterprise. I managed to get some photo’s here. A second exhibition had original artwork from the Mirror Universe comics but unfortunately, you weren’t allowed to photograph any of it.

Jean-Luc Picard is integral to any discussion of Star Trek but for this discussion I’ll let a couple of photo’s do the talking…

Assimilation

Destination Star Trek – Part 4: assimilation. The trip wouldn’t have been complete without a visitation from The Borg and assimilation.

The Borg are my favourite alien race, out of any Sci Fi films or series. Technologically integrated, the relentless, soulless machine, devouring all in their way. The coolest look of any alien. There’s something about the machine taking over. It plays to our human nature.

So, imagine my delight when I came across this guy

Status Update – approaching launch

Preparation

We’ve been hard at work preparing for the launch of MEET ME AT THE JUMPGATE – the episodic, sci fi, webcomic set in the far future with Max as the main protagonist.

murpworks Studio - preparation image

A lot goes into launching a webcomic. With it being a serial affair i.e. on-going, it’s not something you can just complete and present. There has to be a point where you have an amount of pages for launch and then a body of work for on-going posts, a buffer if you will that protects the artist from the demand of advancing the comic, week on week. We are almost at that point.

We have decided on the following publishing schedule

  • Launch Saturday 7 December 2019
    • 10 page launch
  • Publish webcomic Saturdays @18:00
    • 1 page per week
    • 2-page spreads where necessary
  • Publish blog Tuesdays @21:00

If the schedule falls behind, we will publish a pencil/line version of the comic page, to be replaced with finished artwork when ready.

The webcomics sections will be called Sectors. Sector 0 is the pre-publication Sector, the webcomic will begin with Sector 1.

We’re going to include a Donate button and we’re thinking of using Ko-fi. Any donations will go directly toward the webcomic or one of its ancillary developments (there will be more on these in later posts). Some coffee may be imbibed…

So, it’s been a time of research, working out the intricacies of how to do this thing and actually creating the webcomic. We take our research seriously
